Farm Stories and More

There's so much to report on right now that this might be a two part post. But I have to start somewhere, so here goes!

This is a picture of one of Nate's breeding projects. He's in full swing doing crosses between different varieties of one species, or different plants of the same variety. He goes out in the later afternoon or evening, after the plant has done all of its growing. He tapes the flowers of interest shut, then does the rest of his chores. In the morning he goes to the garden and untapes the two flowers involved in a particular cross. He hand pollinates one with the other, then puts a piece of flagging with the cross written on it above the flower. He has a total of 11 different projects going right now. Four of them are a "self" cross to increase the seed of a rare or failing line. The other crosses are for either making new and yummy varieties, or to take old and yummy varieties and make them better. It's a lot of work for Nate, but he loves the mental challenge and planning combined with the practical hands on experience. Plus we get to taste test the results!

At the Fair!

Nate, Channa, Channa's friend Bob, myself and two daughters went to the Oregon Country Fair last weekend. Here are some photos and thoughts on the experience.

Rainbow's Running!

As Channa mentioned, our little black heifer calf gets frisky each night on the way back to the barn. I saw an example of this last Saturday night: she went zooming around the place, kicking and bucking for the sheer joy of being young and alive. Sometimes she'll do it in the morning, too. Sunday morning we all stood outside the cow shed waiting for Aura and Rainbow to come out, camera at the ready. Aura must have sensed the tension, for she initially wouldn't come out at all, and finally came out tentatively and the headed in the wrong direction! Eventually, however, she got turned around and headed out to the orchard, and Rainbow did a little running for us with the camera rolling.

Here are two versions of the movie clip, in two different file sizes so you can choose according to your bandwidth:

Low bandwidth small version (3.5 MBytes)
Higher bandwidth larger version (20 MBytes)

Each of these will open in its own window.

I Love Summer

I love being up at 5am for sunrises like this out the front porch. We leave the windows and screen door open all night and the house is nice and cool. We listen to the birds sing while sipping morning tea. Then off I go to work and off Nate goes to tend critters. Beautiful!

Critter Tales and More

It looks like I got the video to work. Score one for Channa! Here's the setup: Rainbow was three days old and really starting to explore everything around her. She had just had a day in the sun and was very tired. My friend Emily came over to meet the new addition. We got Aura's head in the stanchion and Rainbow settled in near her. Emily carefully sat down out of reach of Aura's horns and played with Rainbow. As you can see, rainbow got a little fresh.

So after a few days of confining Aura and the calf, Aura returned to being the mellow good cow that she has been. And she got a little restive in her stall. We were visiting and cleaning the stall one afternoon and she butted her head out of the stall and wandered on out into the pasture. Here's a photo of her insepcting the yard. She kept Rainbow tucked behind her until she knew the coast was clear. Then she mooed and brought out the little girl for a romp in the sun. Rainbow explored a little bit, then napped while Aura took her fill of fresh green grass and sunshine.

One Step Forward

KurtAndCompletedShedFloor (38k image)

As Channa mentioned just prior to the calf postings, we have had Progress on the battery system that stores energy from the photovoltaic panels. This photo shows me looking pretty grateful to have completed this little subproject of pouring a reinforced floor in the shed strong enough to hold up the weight of the lead acid batteries, which weigh an astounding 1100 pounds! (Consider for a moment that all that expense and weight and effort is necessary to hold about five dollars worth of electricity at current prices, and you get some sense of how cheap energy is in our current daily life).
