Late May and the Growin's Good

It's unstoppable growth at the farm right now. We're fairly overwhelmed with all of the many things that need to be done, and the grass keeps on growing.

Nate's experimenting with a variety of wheat that does not "lodge", or fall over under its own weight. It's also interesting that this wheat grows (over) six feet tall and doesn't lodge. It's defying the laws of agricultural physics, and producing a lot of valubale straw at the same time. We won't be eating this year's harvest; instead we'd like to increase our seed quantity for next year.

Hay Corn May

It's been another busy week as we hit the peak of planting season. All of the corn has come up, the melons are planted, the squash are growing, the tomatoes and basil thriving, and potatoes planted. We also have a surge in wildlife. Here are a couple of nice little corn starts, with a cucumber beetle looking for lunch.

Reaching for the Sky

A few things around the farm, at any rate! The corn has started to poke out of the ground. It'll be fun to watch the neat little rows spring up, then long leaves unfurl. But the upward growth has started!

What Can You Make With Cauliflower, Basil, and Salt?

Nate and I were walking about yesterday evening and decided to peek in on the cauliflower plants. They were an overwintering variety, and we hadn't seen much action out of them. We were tickled to find beautiful, large, creamy white heads on three out of four plants, with the fourth just starting to form a head. So we had cauliflower and cheese sauce with our polenta last night!

A Corny Post

Today we started planting corn! Nate's continuing with his corn breeding project in a big way.

Nate saved the choice kernels from last year's harvest of flint corn. And today, MayDay, was the day to plant. He's been prepping the bed for weeks, and planning for months. With rain in the forercast, we took the opportunity to put the first major crop of the year in the ground.
