The School's Out Meltdown

Have you ever suddenly had a free day, a day to do whatever you might want to do, a beautiful spring day when there are birds chirping and flowers blooming and everything just busting out in growth...and you can't quite figure out what to do? That's me today. So I'm having a cup of tea and making a post to see if we can figure it out.

Planting Maples

After what seemed like a long hiatus, I was able to manage an overnight trip to the farm last weekend. It was a warm and sunny day, perfect for some late-season planting; Nate and I concentrated on planting Big Leaf Maples in some of the more well-drained areas of the woodlot.

Dead Week Photos

No, not pictures of dead things! Though I did find a decapitated rabbit in the field this morning. But I didn't feel pictures were appropriate.

Dead week is the week before finals. I think it's a throwback to semester system colleges, where there really is a week granted to students to just study for their finals. Out here, with a quarter system, we're too crammed for time to allow a week of study. So dead week involves very stressed out students trying to finish projects and term papers, prepare for finals, and still attend class! It makes the students seem like zombies, so maybe "dead" week is appropriate.

This week I've written two small (3 page) papers, put together a large medical research poster, and started work on a ten page paper. Nate's in a similar situation. So needless to say, not a lot of work has been done around the farm. I have been able to go out and take some pictures on breaks from writing and studying. So I'll share some with you!

Here's a photo of a crabapple in blossom, way back in the woodlot.

A Sunny Day in March

Well, we're back in business. The Lappie came back from the shop with (yet another) new logic board and we'll see how long this one lasts!

Western Oregon weather, especially in the valley, can be as unpredictable as my computer's logic board. Tuesday and Wednesday it snowed. There were strong winds, hail, then rain on Thursday and Friday. And suddenly, it became soft and warm. The last two days have flaunted amazingly beautiful clear blue skies. It was forecast to rain today. But after classes I wandered about in a short sleeved shirt, snapping pictures and pruning roses. Here's a cheery daffodil that opened up today.
