11/24/2010: "August: Harvest and Friends"
August saw the beginning of the harvest season... our neighbors came down for a day during blackberry season, and everyone get a bit berry-stained while picking! It was, as always, a good season for blackberries.
Also, not a bad year for plums! I must have picked a hundred pounds at least. I dried most of them, and gave many away.
Lou and I managed to get the trenches filled with the help of the backhoe and the front loader of the tractor, and then I tilled the strips of dirt.
While we were doing this one day, I saw something that I had NEVER seen before: one of Lou's chickens caught and was eating a mouse! Talk about omnivorous! This hen is named Mama hen, and she's a little wilder than the rest of the domesticated flock. Mama hen still has both her good mothering instincts AND her hunting instincts!
