04/20/2009: "Baby Goats!"
Well, Astraya finally gave birth to her baby goats, a male and a doe. They were born last Thursday night; as it happened I was scheduled to visit on Friday, so I got to see them within 24 hours of birth. They're cute little critters! The doe was up and walking around immediately, while the male was a little slower at figuring out the legs. They're tiny, as you can see; at the time these pictures were taken they were not even really nursing yet.
Here's another photo, showing the male, who is slightly larger.
Lou also picked up a couple of weaner pigs; they were runts, and thus on sale. They're staying in the former sheep pen in the south yard. The kids tell me that he's thinking about doubling the size of the chicken population, too; that would really bring in the eggs!
I made it out into the field to check briefly on the wheat; it's getting some good height, though I didn't see the kind of tiller development yet that would indicate good crop.
I'm happy to say that I've finally gotten rid of the last of the ammonia barrels; I pumped the second barrel into another 10 bakery buckets, and then hauled the ten buckets and two barrels up to Oregon City's hazardous waste drop-off. Whew.
