10/16/2007: "The Great Squash Harvest"

Well, the day came at last. The weather was nice and the squash were ready. Into the van and up the hill they went: some into the house, some with others. Wherever they are, it's gratifying to see the results of Nate's labors and planning. This is mostly a picture post, so click below!

Nate's mentor, and master plant breeder Carol Deppe came over to help with the harvest and select or inspect the seed crop. The back of her van here is loaded up with Sweet Meat squash and delicatas.

Here's Nate harvesting a few of the jack o' lantern pumpkins for Kurt's girls.

Nate and Carol taking stock of a very special breeding project. It's so special it doesn't even have a name!

Then Nate had to find a place for the food. So every available corner of the house is filled. And I mean every. That lovely window seat? Now home to delicata and acorn squash and Tahitian Melon squash on the floor!

Who needs space in the living room? The Sweet Meats do!

Sweet Meats lurking behind the sofa...

They've even invaded the bedroom! It's funny when you grow a storage crop, you have to think about where to store it, which can sometimes be a tricky question. But we're happy to have the food security and the beauty of it around us.
