09/25/2006: "So Close to Following Mother's Orders"

We'll gladly eat our Brussels sprouts; they just need to get a little bigger.

This particular variety of Brussels sprouts is "Rubine". Nate direct-sowed 50 row feet of Brussels sprouts in May. They received 15 gallons of water per plant, which isn't much compared to what they might like! We were delighted to discover the nascent globes of tender goodness developing well before the fall rains hit. Once the rain really takes hold, they should begin pumping all resources into those little green nuggets. But for now, we can drool over the beautiful red-veined leaves.

Here they are growing out in the dry garden!
